About the Helderberg Crime Watch
|
|
|
Helderberg Community Policing (a registered, non-profit, Section 21 Company), which trades as Helderberg Crime Watch, is a community initiative i.e. it is run by volunteer members from the local community. Helderberg Crime Watch
(HCW) pro-active patrolling, has been in operation in the Helderberg basin since the year 2000.
The Helderberg Crime Watch used to utilise the services of South African Police Services reservists in the supply of pro-active patrols.
In 2004, due to legislative constraints, the Helderberg Crime Watch was required to abandon the use of these police reservists. In order to continue the supply of security by way of pro-active patrols to the residents, the HCW chose to be in partnership with ADT. This partnership with ADT has existed since.
The joint initiative, whereby HCW contracts ADT to perform the 24-hour patrolling, provides a continued security service to residents in the Helderberg area. Staff from the former Helderberg Community Policing were absorbed into the new HCW/ADT structure.
There are presently six wards in the Somerset West area which are regularly being patrolled:
- Ward 1: Land & Zeezicht
- Ward 2: Parel Vallei
- Ward 9 & 10: Westridge & Briza/Sereno to Helderrand
- Ward 11 & 12: Heldervue/Steynsrust
There are presently four armed response patrols in the area, which are managed by ADT’s state-of-the-art control centre.
By combining ADT’s resources with HCW’s local knowledge, we can offer swift and effective response to callouts as well as presenting a visible deterrent against crime.
By working with a large company such as ADT, we are able to share their communication network and co-ordinate our strategy on fighting crime. We also work with SAPS and community members to raise
awareness and educate residents about crime prevention.
“Crime is everyone’s business and the more we work together to fight it, the stronger and more effective we will be in eradicating it.” |
